I get a lot of emails from job seekers. So if you’re reading this and feel like your applications are going into a black hole, this one's for you.

I recently shared this advice on TikTok—but I don’t think enough people saw it. So let me say it again, clearly:

Applying to job postings alone isn’t the move.
You’re often competing with hundreds (sometimes thousands) of other applicants, and many resumes never make it past recruiter filters or AI screeners.

Instead, run your job search like a top-performing salesperson. Here’s how:

 Step 1: Build Your “Dream Company” List

Identify 30–50 companies where your background, skills, and interests align. Think of this like your Ideal Career Profile (ICP).

Step 2: Find the Right People

Search LinkedIn for decision-makers at those companies—people like Directors, VPs, or Hiring Managers. Even better? Look for mutual connections or 2nd-degree links.

A referral or a quick "Take a look at this person" from someone internal carries more weight than any resume.

Step 3: Get Contact Info

Use tools like Apollo, Lusha, RocketReach, or LinkedIn Sales Navigator to find professional emails or even work phone numbers. Most offer free trials—worth the investment.

Step 4: Personalize Your Outreach

Write 3–5 message templates and test them before going all in. Here’s a loose example:

“Hi [Name], I saw you’re hiring for [Role]. I’d love to connect and share how I can drive impact at [Company]. At my last role, I led [relevant result]. Here’s how I can help:

- Tailored Point 1

- Tailored Point 2

- Tailored Point 3

You won’t hear back from everyone. But the 10–20% who reply will get you closer to interviews than job boards ever could.
And often? You’ll bypass the resume pile entirely.

This approach takes effort—but it puts you in control.
